Title : Colicins and resistance to colonization in Escherichia coli 0103 enterocolitis of rabbit.

Summary : As a first approach on vaccination of weaned rabbits against EPEC-like E. coli 0103 with live strains, we have previously shown that the wild strain C6 - an 0128 strain with low pathogenicity and which expresses the adhesin of higly pathogenic 0103 strains and a colicin-like activity - could drastically inhibit the colonization of the digestive tract by the pathogenic 0103 strain B10 (14). Results presented herein show that the strain C6 produces in vitro several colicins, one of which is probably CoIV. In vivo, the « resistance to colonization » effect against 0103 strains is manifested only when C6 is given per os few days before the administration of the highly pathogenic 0103 strain B10. When the strains are administered at the same time or when the strain B10 is given before the strain C6, the competition is winned by the pathogenic strain. Therefore, the strain C6 cannot be used as an « ecological therapy » in 0103 infections. These results bring also a contribution on the inefficacy of colicins in vivo.
