Title : Isolation and first attempts to caracterize Campylobacter-like bacterias from weaned rabbits
Authors : A. REYNAUD, E. DROMIGNY et D. COURDAVAULT.
Summary : Campylobacter-like bacterias were searched in ileal and caecal contents of selected rabbits from 20 breeding units (18 rational and 2 conventionnal ones). Isolation on selective blood-enriched media were successfull in the animals of 2 units. These bacterias looked like Campylobacter, as judged by their helical morphology and the presence of flagella in optical and scanning electron microscopy, but their isolation required at least a 8-day long incubation period, in microaerophilic conditions and at 37°C. The strains are oxidase positive, catalase positive and they grow at 42°C, but not at 25°C, like the catalase positive thermophilic Campylobacter group. The other biochimal characters did not permit their assignment to an already known species. .
