Title : An appraisal of the resistance status against acaricides by the brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus.

Summary : An in vitro study has been conducted to study the possibility of development of resistance against the acaricides by the brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus. Ticks were collected in several cities in Spain (Zaragoza: 3 different populations, Madrid: 3, Barcelona: 4, Tarragona: 2, and Castellón: 3) and were allowed to feed on laboratory rabbits to produce offspring. The larvae were subjected to the FAO larval packet test to obtain the baseline activity of chemicals like propoxur and deltamethrin. The resistance against amitraz was tested using an already published novel approach as it produces better results than with the FAO method. Probit analysis was selected as the statistical method to determine lethal doses 50, 90 and 99. Resistance against propoxur has been low in most of the populations studied but in those coming from Tarragona and Castellón (resistance factor 2 to 3). However, resistance was very high against deltamethrin, with levels up to 12 times higher than the recommended dosage. No resistance against the amitraz has been noticed in the studied populations of R. sanguineus in this study.
