Title : Feline subcutaneous dirofilariosis due to Dirofilaria (Nochtiella) repens : symptoms, diagnosis and treatment in 10 cases.
Authors : W. TARELLO
Summary : Aims : the presence of Dirofilaria (Nochtiella) repens, has been reported in cats. Lack of clinical and therapeutical descriptions in literature suggested this study. Animals : ten domestics cats (group A) with pruritic dermatosis have been evaluated for D. repens infection in endemic area. Methods : research of microfilariae by Knott technique and anti-D. immitis antibodies by serology were performed in cats of group A and in two control groups, B and C, of 10 cats each. Subjects in group A were treated with the classic macro- and microfilaricide drugs, coupled with the eradication of an underlying condition. Results : cats of group A were all positive for the presence of microfilariae of D. repens and seronegative for antibodies against D. immitis. Four out of the 20 cats in groups B and C were found to have circulating D. repens microfilariae (20 %), in absence of dermatological signs. Subcutaneous dirofilariosis was diagnosed in 10 cats was based upon the skin symptoms, the presence of D. repens microfilariae and the absence of antibodies against D. immitis. The eradication of a recognised underlying factor (Haemobartonella felis) was important for the therapy.
Keywords : Dirofilaria (Nochtiella) repens - zoonosis - Haemobartonella felis - cat.
