Title : | Distinctive fentures of obstetrics in horse |
Authors : | G. SCHMID, R. STOLLA et W. LEIDL |
Summary : | Obstetrics in horses demand high qualifications of the veterinary surgeon. The small numbers of obstetrical cases in horses impedes winning experience. It is given a report on 100 cases of dystocia of mares. In the majority dystocia caused by abnormal presentation, position or posture of the foal (61 cases). Only 19 could be accomplished by reposition and subsequent extraction. In the remaining cases embryotomy or caesarean section were required. 41 out of 50 mares survived after embryotomy (29 total -and 21 partial embryotomies). Mares approximately have the same chance to survive a caesarean section as an embryotomy (n = 18). They are few chances for the foal to survive when a caesarean section is performed. Embryotomy specially partial embryotomy is the most important method in cases of dystocia in mares. |
