Title : Iron status and anemia in canine leishmaniasis
Authors : F. LISTE- BURILLO, F.M. GASCON PÉREZ, J. PALACIO LIESA and M.C. ACENA FABIÀN.
Summary : An accurate diagnosis of the type of anemia in dogs is sometimes difficult to achieve. Canine leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease that usually shows anemia as a clinical sign. To assess whether this anemia is a consequence of the inflammatory process raised by leishmaniasis, several acute phase proteins have been determined. Results show low serum iron levels with positive marrow iron stain, high serum ferritin values, hyperproteinemia with hypoalbuminemia and increases of 13 and .gamma- fractions and increased fibrinogen and ceruloplasmin concentrations. These results are in agreement with an anemia induced by iron sequestrion due to inflammatory mechanisms.
Keywords : leishmaniasis - anemia - ferritina - ceruloplasmin - fibrinogen - dog.
