Title : | Rod dysplasia and early retinal degeneration in a Briard Shepherd Pup Clinical, histological, and ultrastructural study : A case report and Iiterature review. |

Summary : | The aim of this report is to describe the clinical, electro-physiological, histological and ultrastructural signs of an early evolutive stage of dysplasia in the photoreceptors of dogs. A ten-week old mate Briard shepherd dog presenting congenital night blindness was euthanized at the request of the animal's owner, after a behavioural study, and ophtalmoscopic and electroretinographic examinations had been undertaken. After fixation of the eyeballs in a 2,5 % of glutaraldehyde solution, the retinae were examined by optical microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The results indicated that the pup was suffering from dysplasia accompanied by marked early rod degeneration, which is quite unusual in this breed, whereas the cones were intact. Indeed, if one refers to literature, the retinae in Briards pups of this age affected by night blindness do not exhibit, or do so only to a very minor degree (disorganization of the distal disks), lesions of the external segments of photoreceptors. In this case, the lesions of the externals segments (diskal disorganization and vacuolization) were considerable as far as the rods were concerned, whereas the cones were not affected at all. This anomaly has already been reported in the Norwegian Elkhound, but no case had been identified in the Briard shepherd dog. |
