Title : Cottonseed meal partial substitution for groundnut meal : effects on growth performance and carcass traits in the indigenous pig breed.
Authors : A. MISSOHOU et A. AGBOHON..
Summary : Three diets were obtained by replacing on a weight to weight basis 0 % (group C 0), 25 % (group C 25) and 50 % (group C 50) groundnut meal with cottonseed meal. The diets were fed during 116 days to 27 indigenous breed piglets whose initial weight was 5 kg. Average daily gain was 230 g, 230 g and 263 g respectively in the C 0, C 25 and C 50 group. Feed consumption was not significantly affected by dietary treatment but the feed/gain ratio tended (p < 0,1) to be low in animals supplemented with cottonseed meal. The carcass weight tended (p < 0,1) to be higher in C 50 and C 25 than in C 0 animals. The other slaughter traits were not significantly different between groups. However, the liver weight was higher in the C 25 (+ 16 %) and in the C 50 (+ 21 %) than in the C 0 group. It was concluded that up to 50 % cottonseed meal may be substituted for groundnut meal in the indigenous pig breed if the diet is used on a short period.
