Title : | Fenbendazole slow release bolus in young bovine's strongyles prevention. |
Authors : | J.P. LE STANG et J. HUBERT. |
Summary : | A bolus with a slow release of fenbendazole (SRFB) over a 150-day period was given to first year cattle. The efficacy in preventing both pulmonary and gastrointestinal nematode disease was estimated over two years of grazing in the Normandy area (1989 and 1990). Animals treated with the SRFB were compared to calves treated once with fenbendazole (7.5 mg/kg). In the SRFB group, infection by Dictyocaulus viviparus, Ostertagia spp and Cooperia spp remained very low. However, this group was infected by Nematodirus helvetianus in the autumn like calves treated once as shown by the results of worm counts carried out 30 to 50 days after the release of fenbendazole by the bolus ended. The mean weight gain of the treated calves largely exceeded that of the control calves with differences of 16 kg (1989) and 15 kg (1990). |
