Title : | Ovine oestrosis : a review. |

Summary : | Oestrus ovis induces in sheep and goats a naso-sinusal myiasis. This infection is prevalent in hot and dry regions, such as mediterranean countries and Africa. This paper describes morphology and biology of the parasite, introducing epidemiological data. As soon as the first adult flies begins larva-laying in early spring, sheep and goats show signs of harassing. Later, rhinitis develops during summer and sinusitis during winter in countries with temperate climate. Clinical signs and lesions are in accordance with the stage of development of the parasite and differ according to the semons. Recent experiments demonstrated clearly that hypersensitivity phenomenon is associated with appearance of clinical signs, the mechanical trauma induced by the size of the larvae, their hooks and their spines are less important in the appearance of pathological events. During their development, larvae have some immunodeficient effects and induce secundary infections like pasteurellosis. It is easy to identify the disease and the treatment is very efficient using closantel, nitroxinil, rafoxanide, ivermectin or moxidectin. The prevention of this parasitic disease relies on sommer treatment. |
