Title : | Body measurements of Arabe-Barbe horses in Morocco |
Authors : | I. BOUJENANE, I. TOUATI, M. MACHMOUM |
Summary : | This study aims to analyse body measurements and to study the effect of percent of Arabian blood on seventeen measurements and seven body indices of Arabe-Barbe horses. These measurements were carried out on horses of more than 4 years old, having 3.12 to 99.65 per cent of Arabian blood, and born in different breeding zones in Morocco. A part of these data was collected from September 2005 to March 2006 and the other part comes from measurements recorded on horses used in national stud farms between 1924 and 1975. The number of horses measured varied from 530 to 1054 according to the measurement. Thus, the Arabe-Barbe horse was medium sized, weight was 411.1 kg, height at withers was 150.9 cm and body length was 155.5 cm. This horse had a developed chest; chest circumference was 171.9 cm and chest height was 70.4 cm. The sub-sternum void was 80.5 cm and canon bone circumference was 19 cm. The legs are thick with a forearm circumference of 35.4 cm and a knee circumference of 27.9 cm. The principal component analysis showed that these horses may be grouped into three classes: lower or equal to 25 per cent, greater than 25 and lower or equal to 75 per cent, and greater than 75 per cent of Arabian blood. It was proposed to consider as Arabe-Barbe the crossbred with 25 to 75 per cent Arabian blood, and to use the measurements of this category of horses as a basic standard for initial inscription of Arabe-Barbe horses in countries where this population is found. |
