Title : Epidemiological study of ectoparasites in dogs from Erzurum region in Turkey
Authors : O. S. ALDEMIR
Summary : Most ectoparasites on domestic dogs can cause severe dermatitis or act as vectors of pathogenic agents. The purpose of the study was to determine the presence of ectoparasites in dogs from the Erzurum region in Turkey. For this, 48 dogs (26 males and 22 females) that lived in rural areas and did not receive control treatments were inspected for ectoparasites. The ectoparasite prevalence was 43.75% (21 infested dogs: 9 males and 12 females) and 4 types were identified: Ctenocephalides canis, C. felis, Rhipicephalus sanguineus and Sarcoptes scabiei var. canis with infestation rates of 31.25%, 4.17%, 6.25% and 2.08% respectively. Whereas small groups of fleas were encountered on a same dog (parasite frequencies per animal were 10.8 and 5.0 for C. canis and C. felis respectively), the parasite density for the other types was low. Although females tended to be more frequently infested by ectoparasites, especially by C. canis, no significant association between sex and prevalence of ectoparasites or of C. canis was evidenced. By contrast, flea (C. canis) density per dog was significantly higher in males (18.0) than in females (4.5) (p < 0.05). On the other hand, ectoparasites were more frequently diagnosed in warm seasons (spring + summer) than in cold seasons (autumn + winter) (p < 0.05) and although the difference with the cold seasons was not significant, the parasite frequency per dog tended also to be increase in spring and summer.
