Summary : | Experimental infections of north-eastern Algerian Galba truncatula with Fasciola hepatica were carried out in 2003 and 2005 to verify if the geographic origin of snail populations and the species of the definitive host from which parasite eggs are collected might have an influence on the characteristics of snail infections. Six populations of G. truncatula, living in regions differing by their climate (semiarid at Constantine, and wet at Jijel and Skikda), were subjected to these infections, whereas miracidia came from eggs collected in cattle or sheep. Apart from the snail groups of Constantine in 2005, the prevalence of snail infections in the other six groups was high (from 70.0% to 83.3%) and showed insignificant variations. The mean number of metacercariae per cercaria-shedding snail ranged from 139.3 to 184.7. The geographic origin of snails and the species of the definitive host did not have significant effects on this last parameter. These results demonstrate how old are the relationships between the snail and its parasite in the regions studied. Contrary to interpopulation variability which existed for F. hepatica infections in French G. truncatula, this process did not seem to occur in Algerian snails when experimental infections with F. hepatica are performed. |
