Title : | Prevalence of bovine paramphistomosis : results of a field survey in France. |
Authors : | Ph. DORCHIES, J.P BERGEAUD, C. DURANTON, F PRÉVOT et Ph. TESSIER |
Summary : | A field survey has been done during winter 1997/1998 to investigate the presence of Paramphistomum eggs in the bovine faeces. Four hundred and sixty five adult animals, living in areas known for liver fluke infection have been sampled. A modified Mac Master technique allowing to count heavy trematode eggs has been used. The results indicated that 18.1 %, 6 % and 36.8 % of the sampled animals were respectively infected by paramphistome, liver fluke and gastro- intestinal strongyles with mean excretion of 226, 38 and 28 epg. These results confirm the spread of rumen fluke in french cattle : until now this infection had been observed in 23 Departements mainly from western, eastern and central regions. Beef cattle are more infected by Paramphistomum than dairy cattle and the number of eggs in faeces increases during winter. Therefore, it appears that treatment should be done late during housing or just before turn-out. |
